Chaplain Training Class of 2022

HISTORY OF THE CABU CHAPLAIN PROGRAM

In 2010, Central Africa Baptist University partnered with Chaplaincy Services in the United States to formulate our Chaplaincy Program, and the Chaplaincy Certification Programme.

The Chaplaincy Program at Central Africa Baptist University began after chaplains attending our block classes on campus requested it. In response, we invited Dr. John Vaughn to attend the Zambia Leadership Conference in December 2010.

For many years, Dr. Vaughn has been involved in chaplaincy as an author, law enforcement chaplain, and endorser for military chaplains. He leads the International Conference of Evangelical Chaplains Endorsers in the United States. As such, he is a respected and influential voice for Chaplains.

During his visit, Dr. Vaughn met with defense forces, police, and prison chaplains. These meetings led to the formation of the CABU Evangelical Chaplaincy Endorsers, using a curriculum vetted by the Conference of Evangelical Endorsers (USA).

In 2012, CABU began to offer weeklong Chaplaincy training classes formally. Consultative meetings were held with Chaplain officers from the prison, army, and police service to help refine the curriculum. The program at CABU has developed over the past 12 years, and we now offer nine—one-week classes over the course of two years. After successful completion, a chaplain will be certified. The degree program in the Bible was also expanded to include an emphasis on Chaplaincy.

In 2022 Central Africa Baptist University partnered with Associated Gospel Churches Endorsing Agency in the USA. AGC is registered with the US government as a recognized endorsing agency. This partnership allows any degree graduate from CABU who takes the Chaplaincy Program to not only be endorsed by CABU Chaplaincy Program, but also internationally thorough AGC.

Since 2015, we have graduated 133 Chaplains with their Chaplaincy Certification Endorsement.

PURPOSE OF THE CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is captured in this CABU Chaplaincy Purpose Statement:

Equipping chaplains serving in various contexts with the theological knowledge, spiritual depth, and practical skills necessary for effective service to Christ in Chaplaincy ministry.

CHAPLAINCY MINISTRY VISION

Summary: The Chaplaincy Programme at Central Africa Baptist University emphasizes the importance of biblical authority, the proclamation of the gospel, disciple-making, servant leadership, and continuous personal and professional development to meet the unique challenges and opportunities chaplains face, particularly in reaching and serving populations that are often inaccessible to traditional ministry efforts.

Expanded: The Chaplaincy Ministry at Central Africa Baptist University is dedicated to equipping evangelical chaplains from both government and private sectors with the theological understanding, spiritual depth, and practical skills necessary to serve Christ effectively in their distinct ministry contexts. Our comprehensive certificate program is designed to train servant leaders committed to Great Commission living across all chaplaincy fields, including but not limited to prisons, military bases, and community settings.

Our core mission revolves around fostering an evaluation of personal faith against the backdrop of Scripture, instilling a steadfast commitment to the Bible as the ultimate guide for chaplaincy ministry, and equipping chaplains with the essential biblical skills for gospel proclamation and disciple-making. We aim to cultivate a spirit of humility and servant leadership in our chaplains, encouraging them to operate under the authority of their commanding officers with a primary focus on spreading the gospel and fostering discipleship.

Furthermore, we are committed to enhancing biblical literacy for effective counseling and providing ongoing access to theological and ministry resources. This ensures that our chaplains are continually growing in their capability to influence and serve those under their care effectively.

Recognizing the unique and vast opportunities chaplains have to impact a wide range of individuals—many of whom are inaccessible to the traditional church—we are motivated by the potential to shape leaders, teach the true gospel, and offer Christian service grounded in truth to those in need. Through this ministry, Central Africa Baptist University aims to address the significant lack of theological and ministry training among chaplains, empowering them to become pivotal in ministering to and transforming the lives of prisoners, officers, soldiers, and beyond with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

PRAY – PARTNER – PREPARE

We are committed to continuing to preparing military and civilian chaplains to serve the Lord Jesus Christ and minister the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Please pray for these men and women who are being prepared to serve. Ask the Lord to give them a heart to follow Christ, and skill to minister the Word of God in their area of assignment.

If you would like to partner with our Chaplaincy Ministry by giving to help offset the costs of this training, please click the link below. Perhaps you are a military chaplain who would be interested in discussing becoming an adjunct lecturer in the program, please reach out to us.

Finally, if you are someone with an opportunity and burden to serve in military or civilian chaplaincy in Africa, CABU may be the right place for you to prepare for ministry, and receive the approved training required to serve Christ in this ministry.

    Yes bro Philip,

Good morning, and praise the Lord for this significant update on chaplaincy. Please note that Kenya is really struggling with corruption in our police force, prison and army. This is a heart disease that needs Christ forgiveness and healing. Kindly allow me graciously to work with CABU by linking and bring the true biblical chaplaincy that lam seing taught in CABU. God bless you. 🙌
