Long ago, Job declared, “I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Centuries later, King David echoed this devotion: “My soul breaks with longing for your judgments at all times. Your testimonies are my delight.”

All week, I have been asking myself: Do I share their passion for the Word of God?

Five Truths About God’s Word

Consider what Scripture tells us about itself:

  1. It is powerful and effective. (Hebrews 4:12)
  2. It discerns the thoughts and intentions of our hearts.
  3. It is necessary for faith. (Romans 10:17)
  4. It is essential for obedience that brings God’s blessing. (Psalm 119:1)
  5. It is the basis for absolute truth. (Psalm 119:160; John 17:17)

They Loved It, Learned It, and Lived It

If all this is true about God’s Word, then we can understand why Job and David treasured it so deeply. They longed for the blessings of God. They knew they needed direction and wisdom to face each day. The Word was not merely a religious duty—it was their delight, their sustenance, more valuable than daily bread.

I am convinced that if we truly understood the value of God’s Word, it would radically change our lives.

The question remains: Do we treasure His Word more than our necessary food?
