We live in a profoundly unstable world. Recent news headlines remind us of the political turmoil surrounding us. Closer to home, we face economic uncertainty as we work to provide for our families. Our nation struggles with family instability as parents break their marriage commitments to one another. Children experience instability as they are orphaned and moved from home to home.
Without vigilance, this instability will infiltrate our churches. This was precisely the situation in the church at Philippi. In Philippians 4:1-9, Paul presents seven keys to spiritual stability. Consider these principles for your personal reflection this week:
1. Believers Must Be of the Same Mind in the Lord (vv. 2-3)
When believers harbor disagreements and argue with one another, spiritual instability follows. Our unity is found in Jesus Christ. This means setting aside our personal agendas and preferences to embrace God’s perfect will.
2. Rejoice in the Lord (v. 4)
People who complain are unstable people. Notice that joy is found in a relationship with God. Regardless of circumstances, we can always have joy in our hearts because God never changes, and it is in Him that we find our joy.
3. Be Gentle Toward All (v. 5a)
When we react harshly to difficult people and circumstances, we become spiritually unstable. This gentleness speaks of gracious forbearance with others, regardless of how they treat us.
4. Be Anxious for Nothing (vv. 5b-6a)
How can we live free from worry? Here is the answer: “The Lord is at hand; be anxious for nothing.” If the sovereign, omnipotent, omniscient God of love is always with us, what reason do we have to worry? He remains in control, never forgets anything, and possesses the power to accomplish His good and perfect will, which comes to us through His overflowing love.
5. Pray About Everything with a Thankful Heart (vv. 6b-7)
This means exactly what it says—everything.
6. Think Right (v. 8)
Wrong thinking leads to wrong actions that destabilize us spiritually. We must think correctly by meditating on the Word of God.
7. Obey What You Know (v. 9)
Live according to what you have heard, seen, learned, and received concerning God and His will. The God of peace will be with you to help you obey.
Let me ask you the question I have been asking myself: Are you spiritually stable? Are these seven keys to spiritual stability part of your daily life?
