2024 CABU Alumnus

I am one of the Elders at the Open Christian Brethren Church, Kitwe Central. We are found in Twibukishe. I am not yet installed as a pastor, but I have been overseeing the pastoral duties since 2019, when the first pastor and the church went their separate ways. When I came to CABU and during my stay at CABU, whatever I was learning I was putting into practice.

Currently, there hasn’t been any confirmation from my church regarding a pastoral call. I am still waiting, becauses they told me they are putting logistics together. Soon, they will start the process of recruiting a pastor. When the position opens, I should apply, go through interviews, and, if successful, be employed as the pastor.

Growth in Expository Preaching and Sermon Preparation

I first learned expository preaching through a one-year training programme at Proclamation Institute Zambia (PIZ). The CABU preaching classes helped me build on that foundation and grow in it.

The Philosophy of Ministry class with Pastor Mwanisa also helped me sharpen my pastoral duties. The Greek classes with Kevin Sherman and Ben Straub have helped in sermon development and preparation. These tools help me identify the author’s intent and supporting points.

Training and Serving in Multiple Ministry Areas

My training from CABU has also helped me to handle Bible class effectively and to conduct preaching training, as well as ministry training for groups such as:

  • Ushers
  • Sunday School teachers
  • Couples
  • Youths (Singles—mostly on how they should have God-fearing relationships that lead to marriage)
  • Men’s Fellowship
  • Hospitality and Visitation

Every year, I also conduct leadership training for our eldership team.

Church Plant Leadership Development

CABU training has also helped me in training new leaders in our two church plants.

Last year, in 2025, we ordained two elders, two deacons, and two deaconesses at our church plant in Ndeke. All these leaders were being trained by me. The leadership development class with Pastor Ken Banda greatly helped me in training these leaders.

In 2024, we began training leaders at the other church plant in Chibote (on the outskirts of Kalulushi). Though we experienced a setback as many people moved out of the area, we have continued with the Gospel outreach.

Many of those who joined through our evangelistic work in the area are caretakers of newly built houses, so when the owners move into their completed houses, they move away. But the church has assigned two elders who go to the area every Sunday for ministry.

Ongoing Fruit from CABU Training

So my training at CABU has borne fruit and continues to shape my pastoral work.

This training has also made me want to further my studies in theology so that I am better equipped for ministry. I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Theology and Biblical Studies at Central Seminary in the USA, with the prospect of pursuing an MDiv.

Current Challenges and Financial Pressures

The challenge I face is finances, as I only receive a transport allowance from the church I serve. This can’t sustain my family.

I am a trained lecturer at TVTC, so if things are not working out, I may return to secular work to support my family, as I have bills and school fees to pay. Though I have given myself to serve God in ministry, either at church or in parachurch organizations.
