In a world where danger and injustice lurk around every corner, good government stands as our collective shield. When a government fulfills its highest calling, as described in Romans 13:4, it becomes “God’s servant for your good” and doesn’t just manage bureaucracy—it protects the vulnerable, punishes wrongdoers, and creates space for communities to flourish.
Students, this isn’t abstract theory—it’s your future. The government that fails to defend its citizens against crime, corruption, and exploitation isn’t just ineffective; it betrays its sacred trust established in Romans 13:1-2 where we learn that “there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Every policy decision shapes the world you’ll inherit. Will you live in a society where laws are mere suggestions, or one where justice is pursued with vigor and integrity as commanded in Proverbs 21:15, “When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers”?
To those serving in government: Remember that your authority comes with profound responsibility. As 1 Peter 2:14 declares, you are “sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.” When you look away from wrongdoing, when you choose political expediency over justice, when you fail to defend those who cannot defend themselves—you abandon your most fundamental duty described in Psalm 82:3-4: “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
The measure of good governance isn’t found in power maintained but in people protected. Stand firm against those who break the law, regardless of their wealth, connections, or status, for as Deuteronomy 16:19 warns that we must not “pervert justice” or “show partiality.” Your citizens deserve nothing less than your unwavering commitment to justice, which Micah 6:8 reminds us is what the Lord requires: “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
The government that truly serves its people doesn’t just react to crises—it actively defends against threats to peace, order, and human dignity. This is your charge. This is your purpose. This is your calling.
