Happy Thanksgiving!

In 1620, an extraordinary journey of faith began as 101 souls aboard the Mayflower sought religious freedom in the New World. Led by divine providence, these Pilgrims carried their earthly possessions and a vision for governance deeply rooted in Scripture.

The Mayflower Compact, signed by 41 men aboard that wooden vessel, established core biblical principles that would shape American democracy:

“For the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith,” they created a covenant built on eternal truths:

• Just Governance (Micah 6:8): “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” The Compact pledged “just and equal laws,” reflecting God’s standard of righteousness.

• Submission to Authority (Romans 13:1-2): “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” They acknowledged both divine authority and the need for earthly governance.

• Unity in Community (Ephesians 4:3): “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” The settlers committed to work together despite differences, understanding that survival required Christian fellowship.

• Stewardship (Genesis 1:26-28): As God’s image-bearers, they embraced their responsibility to cultivate the land and build a thriving community under His guidance.

That first brutal winter claimed half their number, leaving only 50 survivors. Yet in autumn 1621, those survivors joined 90 Wampanoag natives in a three-day thanksgiving feast—a testament to God’s faithfulness and provision.

Their legacy endures: a nation founded on biblical principles while ensuring religious freedom for all. The Mayflower Compact became more than a governing document; it was a covenant that laid the foundation for the American liberty we have enjoyed for nearly 250 years.

This Thanksgiving, as we gather with loved ones, let’s remember these faithful pioneers who built their government on God’s eternal Word, creating a framework for freedom that continues to bless America today.

Happy Thanksgiving, America!
