This year at Kitwe Church, we have seen God’s power at work. We have seen the gospel powerfully change lives. On Sunday, we listened to the testimony of seven new Christians and rejoiced with them as they obeyed Christ in believer’s baptism.
Religious But Lost
One young woman shared how at a recent baptism service, God used the testimonies of those being baptized to show her that though she grew up on a Christian home, she had not repented of sins and accepted Christ.
Another brother shared that he grew up in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, eventually serving as a deacon and then an elder. After moving to Zambia some years ago he was invited to Kitwe Church. Over the past couple years in the study through the Gospel of Matthew he came to realize that he was not saved, came under conviction of sin, and believed in Christ alone and his finished work on the cross for his salvation. Now, well into his 70’s, he joyfully was baptized and joined the body of belivers at KC.
Athiesm To A New Creation
Another new brother by the name of Simon gave me permission to share his testimony:
My path to becoming a Christian has been a short one by many people’s standards. I was born into a loving family; my mother is a Christian, and my father and brother are both an atheist. I was sent to boarding school at an early age; while there, we were forced to go to church on Sunday, so going to church was a chore.
I have been coming to Kitwe Church for a few years; in this time, my understanding of a relationship with God has grown from being inquisitive, part-time, not a real believer. Although I have always felt that there has been someone/something on my shoulder giving me advice, changing the direction in which I should be traveling.
Over the years, sitting in church and listening to several testimonies, I never had a light bulb moment regarding God. God played a fisherman’s role in my journey, me being the fish. God casts his lure towards me, and I try to catch it, reeling me closer and closer to him, each time revealing what he wants from me and what I must do. I know the closer I get to God, the warmer my relationship with Him has become.
Over the last couple of years, I would drive to Lusaka and back, 7 hours one way. In the beginning, I did not think about God, but soon, I began to talk to God about anything and everything. On one of the trips to Kitwe from Lusaka, I had a conversation with God. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and I will be saved. I asked Jesus for forgiveness and committed my life to Him. Jesus shed his precious blood for my sins on the cross, not for his sins but for mine. Having God in my life, I’m less angry. I feel more compassionate towards my fellow beings.
I have had great pleasure in spending time with a couple of the elders, who helped make sense and made it all easier to learn by putting it all into laymen’s terms. I would like to thank my wife, Helen, for her patience and understanding while I took this journey of discovery. She is an inspiration.
I John 5:12 – “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
Once we are saved, we are saved forever.
This Is The Gospel
The gospel is the message of salvation that encompasses two key elements. First, it calls for repentance toward God, which involves a fundamental change in one’s mindset and perspective, leading to a transformation in behavior and actions as one turns away from sin and toward God. Second, it requires faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, which is more than just acknowledging facts about Him. This faith involves a deep-seated belief in and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, accompanied by complete trust and reliance on Him for salvation. It’s a personal commitment to Christ, as illustrated in Acts 16:31 when Paul instructed the Philippian jailer, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
God is at work through the proclamation of the gospel to draw men and women to faith in His Son! If you are reading this, but your life has never been radically transformed by the gospel, please humble your heart before God and cry out to him.
