As a child, I devoured missionary biographies. If you’re a Christian parent, I highly recommend exposing your children to the lives of those who have gone before us to share the gospel in distant lands. This practice can kindle their spiritual imaginations and lead them to develop a passion for missions from an early age. In future posts, I’ll share some recommended readings, but for now, I want to highlight three quotes and life lessons from a man whose life and ministry stirred my heart for missions like few others – Hudson Taylor.

“God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.”

This quote from the famous missionary to China has been a frequent source of motivation over the past 30+ years as I’ve sought to follow God’s call. Reminding myself of these words has emboldened me to press on, even amid difficulties and doubts, trusting in God’s faithful provision for the work He has given me to do.

“God isn’t looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him.”

How freeing! This insight from Taylor reminds me that God’s purposes don’t hinge on my level of faith or spiritual maturity. He simply desires willing, obedient followers who will go wherever He leads. I don’t need to muster up extraordinary faith; I need only to fix my eyes on Jesus and follow.

“The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed.”

These words highlight a truth that has shaped the trajectory of my life – sharing the good news isn’t a suggestion to ponder but a mandate from our Lord to fulfill. Obedience, not debate or delays, is the proper response to Christ’s clear directive to make disciples of all nations. This perspective has compelled me to step out in faith, trusting that my obedience will lead to a blessed walk with Christ and bring glory to His name.
