This is the final post of a four-part series on Discovering God’s Will. These are lessons that I have learned and lived through the years.
Discovering God’s specific will requires humility, patience, wisdom and a heart fully devoted to obeying His general revealed will first. As you commit yourself to Him, He will “make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6) by illuminating specific directions for your life circumstances one step at a time. Don’t be paralyzed by fear or doubtful uncertainty – launch out in obedient faith!

Three guiding principles
- Obey what you know God wants you to do (Acts 16:6b,7a). Obey the light you already have (Psalm 119:105). Live in humble obedience to God’s revealed will. God does not give further direction to those refusing to take the next step of obedience with Him.
- Be sensitive to God for guidance, one step at a time. God desires, demands, and deserves our obedience! As we pursue God’s will… may we never forget that it is “GOD’S will!” (Acts 16:6b-8a)
- Don’t force your way when God clearly says no. Wait for God to give you direction for the next step.
So, where do we go from here?
The sovereignty of God in providence graciously covers every single situation and circumstance in our lives. Despite making decisions contrary to God’s will, God is ever sovereignly working through those failures and sins to accomplish His purposes.
In matters of sinful decisions, clearly outside the revealed will of God, indeed, God never has a hand in the sin of the action; he does nevertheless have a hand in the action of the sin. God’s will is never thwarted. He sovereignly and calmly orchestrates the affairs of man. God orders affairs to bring him glory. Ultimately, God is sovereignly preparing for the eternal reign of Jesus Christ, who has been anointed King to reign supreme for all eternity to praise His glorious grace.
God’s sovereignty in providence gives assurance to those who are saved, saturated with the Scriptures, Spirit-controlled, and sanctified that they may prayerfully pursue their heart’s desires with confidence that God will direct their steps.
Christian, as you delight yourself in the Lord, proceed with the confidence that God will not allow you to make a well-intentioned mistake and step outside His will and plan.
God’s will is that you be saved, Spirit-filled, saturated with the Scriptures, and sanctified. You can be confident that God has a specific will for your life that finds God’s mission at its center. Walk in God’s will by obeying everything God has shown you. Develop the pattern of saying yes to God… and he will direct your paths.
